HARLINGEN ART FORUM COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS

Prospectus

$ 2000.00 in scholarship monies will be awarded this April to graduating seniors who have been accepted into college, university, or recognized art school programs for the coming school year.

Applicants must present a portfolio of original works and an Application Folder adhering to the following regulations.  Similar regulations are used by the Texas Art Education Association Visual Arts Scholastic Event (VASE) and are also in keeping with those of most schools of higher education.  All applicants, friends and family are invited to attend a reception and exhibit of the applicants, hosted by, the Harlingen Art Forum on April 28, 2008 at  6:30 p.m. at the D’Arte Center.

 

Scholarship Portfolio Regulations

               1.  Entries/Original Artwork:

  1. five to seven (5 to7) artworks submitted in a simple portfolio must be the original work of the student,  no photocopies or slides. At least two (2) works must contain realistic elements  students must use a minimum of three (3) different media in their work
  2. ten (10) additional works – see Application Folder or one (1) sketchbook

2. Application Folder: A simple folder must contain the

  1. Scholarship Master Inventory
  2. Student Analysis Forms (2)
  3. Student Artist’s Statement
  4. additional artwork: up to ten (10) 4”x6” photographs or digital images on CD of additional artworks, avoid distracting backgrounds or one sketchbook

3.  Size:

  1. two-dimensional artwork may not exceed 24”x36” in any dimension nor exceed 50 pounds in weight
  2. three dimensional artwork may not exceed 24”x24”x36” including student supplied base nor exceed 50 pounds in weight

4.  Presentation: Proper presentation shows the artwork to its best advantage.  The following are the guidelines
for the works on paper meant for wall hanging:

  1. matting: Work must be matted or securely mounted on mat board.  Borders must be at least 1.5” but no greater than 4” on top and sides–bottom may be appropriately larger
  2. backing: sturdy backing must be used for the works on paper.  Corrugated cardboard or foam core is necessary with string or wire for hanging

5.  Entry Tags and Master Portfolio Inventory: please print your name and school directly on the back or bottom of each entry

  1. attach an entry tag with clear tape on the top edge only, to the back of each work of art
  2. three-dimensional works, attach the tag to a string and secure the string to the piece
  3. completed Master Inventory is to be placed in the student application folder
  1. Student Analysis Form: complete a Student Analysis Form for two of the strongest art works and place in the student Application Folder.

 

  1. Student’s Artist Statement: a statement of the student’s  interest in pursuing his/her personal artwork including goals for future direction(s) in art .  This paper should not exceed one typewritten / computer generated page.

take their artwork to D’Arte Centre at 115 E. Jackson St. in Harlingen

Senior Scholarship Exhibition at D’Árte Centre   April 8, 2008 through April 28, 2008

Monday, April 28, 2007 at 6:30p.m.   A reception honoring all teachers, applicants and their families will be held at the D’Arte Centre.

Artwork may be picked up after 8:00 p.m. on April 28, 2008 until Saturday May 2, 2008
